MONTCLAIR - The city's share of funding for renovation and expansion of the Inland Valley Humane Society animal shelter in Pomona was approved Monday by the City Council.
Total cost of the project is $1.8million. The five-year cost to Montclair will be $50,000, charged at a rate of $833.33 per month for 60 months beginning in July.

The expenditure will be $10,000 from the fiscal year 2008-09 budget and $10,000 in each budget year through 2012-13.

The IVHS needs funding from its 11 regional client cities to renovate its animal-control shelter.

The shelter expansion will address the expanding need for local animal-control services and would accommodate recent technological changes.

Cities served by the shelter were assessed for renovation funds at a prorated rate based on their population.

The total prorated assessment cost for contracted cities is about $700,000. Another $300,000 will come from the Humane Society's reserve fund, and about $1million is expected in donations from supporters.

Construction has already begun and is expected to be finished later this year. Initial funds for work are from a loan, officials said.
